This book introduces students with little or no prior programming experience to the art of computational problem solving using Python and various Python libraries, including PyLab. It provides students with skills that will enable them to make productive use of computational techniques, including some of the tools and techniques of “data science” for tuttag computation to model and interpret data.

Students are introduced to Python and the basics of programming in the context of such computational concepts and techniques as exhaustive enumeration, bisection search, and efficient approximation algorithms.

The book does not require knowledge of mathematics beyond high school algebra, but does assume that readers are comfortable with rigorous thinking and not intimidated by mathematical concepts. Although it covers such traditional topics as computational complexity and simple algorithms, the book focuses on pyghon wide range of topics not found in most introductory texts, including information visualization, simulations to model randomness, computational techniques to understand data, and statistical techniques that inform and misinform as well as two related but guftag advanced topics: Introduction to Computation and Programming Using Python can serve as a stepping-stone to more advanced computer science courses, or as a basic grounding in computational problem solving for students in other disciplines.

This is the ‘computational thinking’ book we have all been waiting for! With humor and historical anecdotes, John Guttag conveys the breadth and joy of computer science without compromise to technical detail.

This book is perfect for any student who wants to explore the essence of computer science. John Guttag is an extraordinary teacher and an extraordinary writer. Perhaps having been an undergraduate English major — an uncommon stepping stone to the leadership of the world’s top EECS department — has something to do with this.

This is not ‘a Python book’ — although you will learn Python. Nor is it a ‘programming book’ — although you will learn to program.

John Guttag Python Book Finger Exercise 5

It is a rigorous but eminently readable introduction to computational problem solving. There’s no such thing as the only computer science book you’ll ever need.

But if you had to pick only one, this would be a great choice. You’ll begin by getting a solid introduction to programming in Python. Armed with that, you’ll go hands-on with important computing ideas like random methods, statistics, and optimization, using tools of great theoretical beauty and great practical importance.

It is a fast paced but very readable first year text for Computer Science. It uses Python 2. X as its language and you will come up to speed in Python quickly, and then spend the bulk of the book learning algorithms and computational techniques.

I am very pleased gurtag the book. It is terse and fast. If you require a more leisurely pace, John Zelle’s Python Programming, an Introduction to Computer Science takes pages to cover what this book covers in pages, and then has a short chapter just touching on what pjthon book covers more deeply in the remaining pages.

Zelle’s book is also a popular first year CS text, but obviously for a different audience.

Introduction to Computation and Programming Using Python by John Guttag

Obviously, you will learn more with this book if you can take the pace. I bought Zelle’s book also and have used it for extra exercises and the occasional alternative explanation. This also seems to be a good book, and uses Python as its language for examples. Buy Guttag for sure, or Zelle if you feel the need for a slower pace, and Miller and Ranum to flesh out your algorithms. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase.

As the title suggests, it is a book on computation, and Python is used as a programming tool. It assumes no prior knowledge of programming, but readers are expected to have good mathematical maturity as it goes on to discuss techniques from a wide variety of topics from numerical analysis to clustering.

If you already know programming, and just want to gutttag Python data and control mechanisms, this is not the book for you. Terrence McGarty Top Contributor: I used it for on line course and gave Grand Daughter a copy for Christmas since she wanted to learn coding.

Python is great for string manipulation. Lots of open source tools and this book takes you step by step thought with both coding and fundamentals. I have know Prof. Guttag and his work is always superb. This ojhn worth the purchase. One person found this helpful. Out of date in concept. Doesn’t really follow Python idioms in coding–really codes like Java in Python.

Sections on classic computer science algorithms and data structures are the best. The data science stuff is just to be trendy and is entirely inadequate.

This book is not the best way to learn Python. The finger exercises often require additional knowledge of programming which has not yet been introduced in the pythom.

I’m using this book for a class, but I would pick a different book if you want to learn Python. This book guhtag 2. I like how guttaag book goes through the examples, but I still have complaints.

It’s often unclear how we are supposed to categorize our examples when guttzg type them out, and I think labeling the unlabeled ones outside of the text. Also, I would like to see basic College Algebra and maybe basic Calculus examples, so that mathematical calculations in real-life and other classes can be easier to calculate.

Otherwise, this is more comprehensive than the online tutorials, though the Python Docs website is plentiful. Great Introduction To Material.

I purchased this while taking the author’s MIT course. I found it easy to follow despite a bit of a steep learning curve. I had to do some review of college level pre-calculus but all in all I’d buy it again. I learned a great deal. This book is written pytjon an introduction to Computer Science and Programming aiming at preparing and educating potential Computer Scientists. The writing style, the vocabulary used, the concise and to-the-point contents, and the vast topics that are covered in this introductory book, all are to serve the purpose of teaching computational and algorithmic thinking to a nerd-to-be.

This book is not meant to teach you only programming, or only Python. It uses Python just as a tool to teach the science of computing mohn an introductory level.
